Andrew Frapwell is highly-regarded both nationally and internationally in the design and development of effective and sustainable bespoke training to meet individual professional learning needs.

He has worked with a range of stakeholders at local, regional, national and international level which has included government agencies and authorities such as the Specialist Schools Academies Trust (SSAT), the Qualification and Curriculum Development Agency, Education Development Trust (EDT – previously CfBT), Becta and the Youth Sport Trust.

Professional Development

Since 2014 there has been a plethora of policy changes, in particular: the Ofsted Framework; National Curriculum reform from 2014; the removal of assessment levels; changes to Health & Safety and Safeguarding; examination reform; and more recently the launch of the PE & Sport Premium; and a focus on physical activity.

In response to this we have developed professional courses to support teachers in addressing their continuing professional development needs. These courses focus on three core elements:

  • Pedagogy for deep learning
  • Standards-based Assessment
  • Curriculum Design for mastery learning
Areas of Expertise
  • The provision of Professional Learning for Physical Education in particular standards-based assessment and effective curriculum design and development;
  • The delivery of Ofqual regulated accredited qualifications. afTLC Ltd is an accredited centre for 1st4sport qualifications (PE & Sport level 2 and 3), ITC First (First Aid qualifications) and the SLUK Level 5/6 Primary PE Specialism.

Andrew currently consults for: The Association for Physical Education (afPE) as their national lead on assessment; Ofqual as a registered subject expert (Andrew was the Lead Reviewer for the GCE A and A/S Level qualifications); Hartpury University College and Birmingham City University as a Curriculum Advisor and Mentor; the University of East London as a European Project Lead and a number of coaching companies (including the Jamie Carragher Sports and Learning Academy) advising them in their training support services.

Andrew’s experience in the United Kingdom has included leading the support for the implementation of the secondary National Curriculum (2007-10), and lead consultant for the Specialist Schools Academies Trust [SSAT (2009-2010)]. Nationally he was involved in the subject Stakeholder group for the review of the National Curriculum for 2014. Internationally he has presented workshops and training in the United States (New Hampshire & Hawaii), New Zealand, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Saudi Arabia, the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Hungary and Malaysia; consulted on the production of adult training materials in Saudi Arabia in 2012; and was the author of the physical education curriculum for Kosovo (Jan-Jun 2014) as part of a European Union donor project.

Andrew is the Company Director of af Thinking & Learning Company Ltd, he holds a Master of Science degree with distinction in Education Leadership and Management and is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He has three children, is an avid skier and an Everton FC season ticket holder!

Andrew has presented and authored extensively in Education and Training including the title “In Deep: Learning to Learn” (2010) and his most recent book “A Practical Guide to Assessing without Levels” (2015). In his writing capacity, he was co-editor of the afPE National Journal (2010 – 2014), and author of the 1st4sport level 2 and 3 PE and School Sport qualifications, as well as one of the authors of the SLUK/afPE Level 5/6 Primary Specialism in PE qualification. Such output led to Andrew receiving the afPE National Leadership and Influence Award 2016.
