The Qualsafe Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is one of the most recognised qualifications in further education and training. The diploma not only enhances your teaching skills but also provides a pathway for teaching assistants or coaches working in schools to advance their career and obtain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS), QTLS grants professional parity with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
What does this qualification cover?
The course covers four mandatory units totalling 75 credits and optional units which must total 45 credits.
The mandatory units are:
- Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
- Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
- Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training
- Wider Professional Practice and Development in Education and Training

Who is it suitable for?
This introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification must be undertaken by individuals who are currently in a teaching role. There is a minimum requirement of 100 hours of teaching.
If you are working as a teaching assistant or coach in school with a focus on or interest in physical education and wish to gain teacher status then this is the course for you.
You must also be at least 19 years or over with prior teaching experience in a school and be able to communicate effectively in English which includes listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The course is delivered part-time over two-years with a mixture of blended and hybrid learning with a commitment to one-day, half-day and evening sessions.
The total qualification time (TQT) is 1200 hours and equivalent to 120 credits.
Guided learning hours (GLH) are 360 hours.
The teaching requirement is 100 hours.
Learners must complete all assessments in all units successfully within the registration period to achieve the qualification. The maximum period to achieve this qualification, including any referrals is 36 months.
Assessment methods:
A. Theory assessments including written assignments, written questions, projects, portfolio of evidence.
B. Practical assessment which will include 8 observed practical teaching assessments.
Two grades can be given – Pass or Fail
Attendance on the course costs £2,299+vat.
This includes a registration fee of £185.00, which we pay to Qualsafe on your behalf, planning, delivery, photocopying, resources, a course portfolio/learner pack, assessment, internal quality assurance, course administration and e-certification.
Payment options:
- Two payments – a non-refundable deposit of £344.85 to enrol, and £2,413.95 in year 1 (all prices inclusive of vat)
- Three payments – a non-refundable deposit of £344.85 to enrol, and £1034.55 in year 1; and £1,379.40 in year 2 (all prices inclusive of vat)
- Monthly payments are available on application
